8 Best Vegan Local Campaigning/Social Groups

The UK leads the world in many things, but our local vegan campaigning groups are true World Cup Winners and could teach the rest of the globe a thing or two. As with the individual campaigners, we are truly blessed with players way and beyond the low achievers of our footie team, and there are genuinely so many successful dedicated and highly achieving groups in this category that it's truly a shame to leave anyone out at all... but there you go. Genuine apologies if your group has not been nominated.

  • Campaign for Eco- Veganism: I'm in Bristol and Bristol Vegans would have got my vote normally but in fact these guys will. They were a big part of the recent Climate Change March and are getting themselves sorted for future campaigns. See http://www.ecoveggie.org.uk for more info about these classic grassroots vegan campaigners. If anyone or anything epitomised the spirit and purpose of these awards, it's this lot. Respect!
  • Thames Valley Veggie/Vegans: Probably the most social of the regional groups, with regular dinners and meet ups, spearheaded by the massively enthusiastic and highly achieving Stephen and Sophie. Brilliant website with loads of local info and news, hosted on Local Veggie Websites, which is Stephen and Sophie's brainchild which has spawned over 50 local veggie websites! Remarkable. See the local website here http://www.t3v.veggroup.org/index.html
  • Vegan Campaigns - London: Very proactive with loads of events combining social and protest in one easy swoop. Organisers of umpteen free vegan foods events as well as helping massively with the London Vegan festival in August. Spearheaded by the wonderful Caroline along with a loyal and effective band of supporters. See http://www.vegancampaigns.org.uk/
  • Leicester Veggies and Vegans: Very nice affair up in the Midlands organised mainly by Sue, with regular monthly meets, talks and a highly successful monthly 'Diners Club' too. Really warm feeling from this group and right at the heart of several local veggie events - see their website for more info http://www.leicesterveggies.org.uk/index.html
  • Bristol Vegans: No apologies for including this one cos we have a right good laugh down this way at our fully functioning regular vegan dinners, meet ups and what have you. Right now we've just booked 32 places for our xmas bash and that's a sell out so there you go. Awesome turnout from this bunch of miscreants and reprobates at the Bristol Vegan Fayre where they helped host the event and put up with all sorts of shenanigans in truly admirable Bristol fashion, didn't bat an eyelid. Top bunch, Jason's jokes are verging on legendary status and Ellen's hard work in keeping us all together is just truly excellent. Respect to Paul too for all his help in the early days - see the Bristol Vegans website here http://www.veganbristol.makessense.co.uk/index.html
  • Leeds Veggies and Vegans: Top outfit held together by top gal Natalie, regular meets, films, events etc, plus the really excellent 'A Taste of Leeds', their brilliant recipe booklet, and their much lamented and departed regular printed newsletter which was an excellent read all round. See website for more info http://www.leedsveg.co.uk/index.htm
  • Birmingham Veggies and vegans: Very active group with regular meetings, dinners, rambles, talks etc, and over 100 people to their last summer BarBQ which was brilliant. Really good website too ( http://www.bvv.org.uk/cms/ ) giving a really vibrant up to date feel to the regional vegan thing. Ranks recently swelled by the recent arrival of the Vegan Society whose move to Birmingham in 2007 is proving excellent. Whilst in the Brummie zone it's a good opportunity to give a nod to the recently formed Midland Vegan Campaigns, and also the Redditch lot - fair play to ya's all.
  • ScouseVeg: Obviously home to by far the greatest football team the world has ever known - Everton, Everton FC...and if you know your history, its enough to make your heart go whoa whoa whoa.......apart from that, also home to a vibrant and lively local group of vegan activists including recent Liverpool Post front page vegan superstar Niki who managed to get a massive feature in the Post last World Vegan Day, and true superstar PhunkyKT who helps organise the vegan festivals in the area. Constantly updated website with loads of local and national stuff, including reports on the favourite shop of recently burgled Liverpool idol Stevie Gerrard's wife Alex who apparently has an unpleasant habit of buying fur out of Cricket, a local revolting outlet that still sells the skins of animals to fools. Apparently Gerrard's insurance claim is being investigated due to his false claim that he had a premiership winners medal stolen during the burglary, since Liverpool haven't won the Premiership since nearly twenty years ago this was obviously a fraud. And apparently - the Baby's not ...yeah alright, shut it. Enough. This is the Yaoh Vegan Environmental Awards 008, not the Everton football forums.   http://www.scouseveg.co.uk/
Big up also to Merseyside Animal Rights - the two local organisations work together to provide Merseyside with a social and animal rights presence.
