8 Best Vegan Dairy
Alternatives
There are many brilliant vegan
alternatives to milk, cheese,
butter, eggs, ice cream etc,
and as the world gets to grips
with the environmental devastation
that is the price of dairy
milk today, more and more products
similar to these will appear
as people wean themselves from
meat and dairy product. Thanks
to all the people and companies
that have developed such a
myriad of choices for the 21
st century vegan lifestyle,
and especially to Arthur Ling,
the man who is credited with
creating the UK's first soya
milk and dairy alternatives
nearly 50 years ago. Arthur
passed away a few years ago
but his memory and inspiration
is alive and well.
- Plamil Mayonnaise: Plamil
are the original vegan firm
in the UK, the forerunners
to all the rest of us but
still very much at the cutting
edge of new vegan products,
including loads of dairy/sugar
free chocolate as well as
soyamilk. Their mayonnaise
is still the best, despite
plenty of contenders, and
this wonderful firm has a
small but much loved part
of many a veggie/vegan's
heart over the years. And
still very much part of the
vibrant UK vegan scene, present
at all the main shows and
sponsors for some of them
too, including the Incredible
Veggie Road Shows. Roll out
the red carpet. http://www.plamilfoods.co.uk/
- Swedish Glace Ice Cream: Another
much cherished product going
back many years now to the
days when this was the only
vegan ice cream anywhere
to be had. Still holds its
own amongst a massively increased
array of vegan options in
this ever expanding market.
Loads of flavours, soy based
and not too pricey. http://www.fayrefield.com/gallerySwedish.htm
- Bute Island Sheese: Recently
revamped range from these
maestros from the Isle of
Bute way up near the Arctic
Circle in Scotland. Lots
of flavours including cheddar,
mozzarella, Gouda and Edam
as well as several 'Creamy'
style too. All vegan, free
from hydrogenated fats and
cholesterol, filling the
gap for many as they wean
themselves from dairy, as
well as remaining firm faves
in the fridge for vegan/veggie
families across the UK and
beyond. Recent support for
vegan events has not gone
unnoticed either, much appreciated
on a grass roots level. Looking
forward to their next move. http://www.buteisland.com/
- Shakeaway vegan milkshakes: Shakeaway
can be found in about a dozen
cities in the south of the
UK, including Bristol. Primarily
a 'milkshake' outlet but
now making a considerable
name for themselves amongst
the rapidly expanding vegan
community for not only their
support for such events as
the Bristol Vegan Fayre but
also their stunning selection
of vegan friendly shakes
made with soya and a myriad
of flavours way and beyond
the mundane offerings that
vegans are so used to. Congratulations
to Pete and Rob and the whole
team for this nomination
and I know they'll all be
pleased as punch. See here
for their vegan options,
currently numbering somewhere
around 40. http://www.shakeaway.com/milkshakes.html#vegan
- Booja Booja Ice Cream: Oh
my gosh now we're talking.
Like proper. A just quite
alarming creation delightfully
entitled 'Stuff in a Tub'.
And what stuff indeed. Only
available through the Independents
(never supermarkets) and
clearly from another planet.
5 flaves and all of the vegan,
raw (importantly), sugar
free (sweetened with agave
syrup), organic, and made
from a cashew nut base that
gives the most divine consistency
and texture that compliments
the varied and subtle tastes - namely
Chocolate, Vanilla, Ginger,
Pecan 'n Maple syrup and
the out of this cosmos Coconut
which is a stunning interpretation
of what heaven can actually
be. Bit like the Everton
midfield. http://www.boojabooja.com
- B'Nice Ice Cream: Brand
new on the block, made from
rice, distributed by Beanie’s
and right up there with Booja
Booja. 3 flaves (Chocolate,
Strawberry and Vanilla) launched
in 2007 to universal applause
including international awards
from both PETA and The Vegan
Society, and (rumour has
it) soon to be joined this
summer by the delectable
and very tasty Tropical Mango
flavour, we understand. The
B’Nice range is made
from rice and is soya and
dairy free, as well as being
thick and flavoursome, quite
unlike any dairy free ice
creams to appear before now.
Has the added advantage of
being excellent value too,
so brilliant for families.
Distributors Beanie’s
(who also distribute the
Fry’s range of veganburgers)
are a top top bunch who are
loved and adored and are
Champions League when it
comes to supporting the vegan
movement. http://www.beanieshealthfoods.co.uk/bnice.php
- Redwood Meltin' Cheezly: This
is the daddy of all inventions
when it comes to vegan dairy
alternatives - the elusive
holy grail of the vegan diet - a
vegan cheese that actually
melts. 4 years in the making
and now vastly successful
as the four flavours (Cheddar,
Gouda, Edam and the brilliant
Mozarella) spread to the
4 corners of the globe. Redwood
have some truly awe inspiring
creations in their range
including their most recent
addition - a Greek Feta style
vegan option that has graced
out shelves since the summer
of 2007. But it's the Mozzarella
Meltin' Cheezly that takes
the biscuit and the accolades,
and quite likely this award
too. http://www.redwoodfoods.co.uk/
- Zedz Foods Muffins: Zedz
foods are a family based
business located in central
Wales dedicated to creating
and baking top notch vegan
muffins, cakes and savouries,
thereby filling a massive
gap in the vegan market.
Wonderful people and wonderful
products to match, they represent
the cutting edge of animal
free treats, one look at
their xmas goodies is enough
to convince anyone, Rum and
Plum puddings, Mincemeat
and Brandy muffins - who
says dairy free is dull?
Or for that matter gluten
free and sugar free, which
nearly all their products
are, making them unbelievably
good options for nippers
especially. Marvellous. http://www.zedzfoods.co.uk/
