8 Best Vegan Campaigners
We are a nation truly blessed
with an abundance of very talented
and dedicated vegan campaigners,
and it was harsh one choosing
these. Inevitably some famous
and some not so well known
but equally deserving individuals
have been left out - please,
no offence intended. But whilst
we are mentioning those feeling
excluded, let's not forget
those who are in prison, especially
the folk from SHAC (still remanded)
and also SPEAK (also on remand
at time of writing). And of
course, those who are sadly
no longer with us - let's continue
to work together to make sure
their work was not in vain.
- Pat from Veggies: Recently
recognised by The Vegan Society
in their 2006 and 2007 awards,
loved and respected across
the UK for their awesome
veggieburgers and mobile
kitchen which has seen active
service at untold gatherings,
festivals, events, protests
and the like. Cheap as chips,
healthy, warm, comforting - and
our main man Pat must take
some of the accolades that
this worthy bunch attract
on a regular basis, although
really it's the whole team
that is more important than
the individual here. Special
mention too for George and
Joe, who regularly travel
with the Veggies crew, and
let's be fair, a vote for
Pat here is a vote for the
whole Veggies team that is
straight outta Nottingham
and still keeping it real http://www.veggies.org.uk/
- Ingrid Newkirk - PETA: People's
Ethical Treatment for Animals
has hit the headlines time
and again for their often
outrageous protests and campaigns,
and it is Ingrid who set
up the London branch of this
huge Stateside operation
back in the 70's. Massive
range of celebrity supporters
includes an oft naked Pamela
Anderson as well as a fully
clad Stella and Mary McCartney,
whose mum Linda was Ingrid's
best pal and soul sister
back in the day. Recent Cleb
bash in Bruton Street saw
other fine luminaries such
as Jeff Beck, Siouxsie Sioux,
Martina Navratilova, Jennifer
somebody from the X files
and Paul Merton off the telly.
PETA continue to highly achieve
in the campaign stakes and
much of that is due to the
energy and commitment from
Ingrid and her team http://www.peta.org.uk/
- Andrew Tyler - Animal Aid: Outstanding
year of achievements for
Andrew and his trusty crew
as Animal Aid recently celebrated
30 years of campaigning for
animal and vegan issues.
A recent exposure by Andrew
of Horse slaughtering in
the West Country was reported
on BBC Points West and was
one of many campaigns run
by the team. Shout out to
Mary too for all her marvellous
work running the annual Christmas
Without Cruelty show - as
ever, it's a team game and
a vote for Andrew is a vote
for all at Animal Aid http://www.animalaid.org.uk
- Heather Mills: Heather
has unfortunately often made
the headlines for all the
wrong reasons, due to a crass
and bitter media campaign
against this feisty and courageous
vegan campaigner. In true
underdog style she has managed
to manipulate the media in
return, using the glare of
publicity she receives to
turn our attention to more
pressing issues, such as
the contribution Livestock
farming makes to global warming.
Currently spearheading a
Viva! campaign to highlight
this particular issue, Heather
is one of the most respected
and yet reviled characters
on the planet, due largely
to the disgusting treatment
by the gutter press. Have
a look at Heather on YouTube
below and make your mind
up - her message is loud
and clear, and extremely
well presented http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVSvA7I8fho
- Neil Lea RIP - Realfoods: Neil
Lea sadly passed away in
2007, but no awards would
be complete without a bigup
for this true star of the
Animal Rights movement. Many
will know of Neil already,
for those that don't, Neil
struggled with ill health
and was confined to a wheel
chair for much of his life
but was often in the front
line at many protests and
demos, usually with a big
loudspeaker in his hand,
just in case anyone should
miss what he was on about.
We'll all miss Neil and we
wish his surviving family
all the best, especially
his wife Mary, son Seamus,
and his mum.
- Alex Bourke - Vegetarian
Guides: Alex
has been publishing his veggie
guides for years now, an
invaluable companion for
anyone wishing to access
details of veggie friendly
shops, places to stay and
places to eat, in the UK,
Europe and beyond. Alex
has also recently finished
a 14 year stint at The Vegan
Society, where he was active
on the Council, and he deserves
huge respect for his contribution
to the Society through often
turbulent times, especially
as all his time and commitment
was given on a volunteer
basis. Busy at many talks,
demos and events across the
UK and now channelling some
of his vast energy for all
things vegan into new UK
political party Animals Count.
Originally from Bristol - top
man, much appreciated http://www.vegetarianguides.co.uk/index.shtml
- Tony Wardle - Viva!/VVF: Tony
helped set up Viva! over
10 years ago and still remains
somewhere near the helm as
the Viva! ship continues
to grow both in popularity
and success. Regular enthralling
contributions to Viva! Life
mag make him a must read
for any veggie/vegan issues,
with his thoughtful yet compelling,
informed and challenging
articles completely not afraid
to take on the 'big guys'
and rubbish their lies and
deceit. Now calling himself
the 'Grumpy Old Vegan' he
has his own website www.tonywardle.co.uk where
you can read his excellent
writings in full. Stunning,
brave and much respected,
especially his must read
articles about the impact
that Livestock and Fishing
has on the environment.
- Simon
and Sandra - Vegfam Vegfam
have been in the running
since 1963 now which
is coming on 45 years,
until recently this beautiful
charity was run by Friedenstern,
who passed away a couple
of years ago. Since then
the flag has been flown
by Simon and Sandra who
have kept the show running,
staying true to the original
pledge to 'Feed the Hungry
Without Exploiting Animals.' We
are very big fans of
this outfit and wish
them loads of support - .
